The therapeutic relationship

The therapeutic relationship or the therapeutic alliance, is the close yet boundaried relationship between a psychologist and a patient. It is the means by which a practitioner and a patient hope to engage with each other, and effect beneficial change in the patient. In the therapeutic space, the practitioner works respectfully, confidentially and provides a safe, non-judgmental and open atmosphere where the affected individual can be at ease. In working with a practitioner, it is important to feel that your therapist has the competency, skill set, and the honest desire to help you.
